Microsoft has updated its System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 and is available to download via Microsoft Download Center.
According to Microsoft, this tool is being offered because an inconsistency was found in the Windows servicing store which may prevent the successful installation of future updates, service packs, and software. This tool checks your computer for such inconsistencies and tries to resolve issues if found.
Note that this tool is available to customers running genuine Windows only.

Microsoft has made available the Windows NT Backup Restore Utility for Windows 7 & Windows Server 2008 R2 and is available to download via Microsoft Download Center.
Windows NT Backup Restore Utility restores backups that are made on Windows XP and on Windows Server 2003 to computers that are running Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. The utility comes in handy if you have moved from Windows XP to Windows 7.

If a roadmap published by a product manager at Microsoft is to be believed Windows 8 is just one and half years away! Yes, Chris Green has posted a useful product support lifecycle information that reveals that Windows 8’s mainstream support will begin in July 2011.
